Electric cars in US; what is the deal?

General Motors (GM) launched first 100% electric car (EV1) in 1999 which was discontinued in 2002. In 2003, Ford, Toyota and Honda had to pull their electric vehicles off the road.

After almost 10 years, affordable 100% electric cars are coming to life once again. In India, mass production plant for Reva was started in 2008 and currently being sold in 24 countries (not yet in US). Now we see many electric cars due for launch starting from 2010 – GM’s Chevy Volt (gas-electric combination), Nissan-Leaf etc.

Does this mean that world has lost 10 most important years which could have avoided – wars over oil, terrorist activities, deaths of soldiers and civilians, poverty, pollution and much more?

Who killed the Electric Car? – by Chris Paine (Documentary - 2006)

The president of US in the last decade – George W. Bush (2001 – 2009)

Big Oil Companies Have Experienced Record Profits of Nearly $34 Billion Since Bush Took Office. The higher overall gasoline prices have cost the American consumer a net of over $25 billion during Bush's first term in office. This money has gone directly from consumers' pocketbooks into the hands of oil companies and oil producers, including OPEC.

The oil industry sells nearly 3 billion gallons of gasoline per week in the U.S.

Combined Profits of Exxon-Mobil, Chevron-Texaco, Conoco-Phillips

2003: $33 Billion

2004: $47 Billion

2005: $64 Billion

Why Reva is not in US yet? Reva has teamed up with Bannon Automotive and planning to setup the plant in Syracuse, NY but due to some ‘pending’ political approvals, not able to move forward. So, what’s the deal here?

Will Nissan be able to enter US with 100% electric car?
